What is Communication?

Communication is Transactional:

Each person is both sending and receiving simultaneously.

Parties communicating have an impact on each other.

Shared meaning:
"Communication is the process by which we understand others and in turn endeavor to be understood by them." Martin Anderson, 1959

Symbolic interaction:
"Communication is a dynamic (powerful),

systemic
(parts form a whole) process

in which communicators discovery personal meanings

through their symbolic interactions."
Julia Wood, 1998

Language gives us the ability to think about the future, to "time bind" and imagine ideal realities.

Principles of Goal Setting

·     Dream: an intense desire for something, often seems unreal, vague and far off.

·     Goal: a dream with a deadline. Should be worded in terms of outcomes that can be measured.

·     Objectives: steps for achieving the goal. Breaking a big goal down into workable tasks.

·     Blue Skying: imagining the ideal as if you could do anything.

·     Tinkering: figuring out what steps are needed to make the ideal real.

A Personal Mission Statement is a brief, carefully thought out declaration that identifies your purpose and core values guiding your life.

1. It should be no more than a single sentence long.

2. It should be easily understood.

3. It should be easily remembered.

The mission of NU is to provide, in a distinctly evangelical Christian environment, quality education to prepare students for service and leadership.
