Packet of First Day Materials (in PDF format with all Scripture readings)
This is a narrated tutorial to take you through Lesson 1 of the textbook. Depending on your operating system and type of internet browser, you may be able to view this file and hear the audio directly from this website. It will probably be more effective however, if you save the file to your own computer and run it from there. It is 13.3 MB in size and has nearly fifty pages.
The tutorial uses Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 (available for free). Earlier versions may not support audio or Full Screen viewing. I like running it in Full Screen mode because the text is easier to see.
Use the navigation buttons to advance the slides, and click on the speaker icon to hear the narration.
Your aim should be to be able read all of the Hebrew text by yourself, out loud. Listen to my example and read along as best you're able.
Even though it is possible to view the tutorial in about an hour, don't wear yourself out by working through the whole thing at one sitting! Take a break, stretch, go back a few slides and try reading them yourself at your own pace, then check yourself by reading aloud with me. For a change, you may want to work directly from John Dobson's textbook which this tutorial closely follows.
Focus on accuracy more than speed and relax--you didn't learn how to speak your own language in one sitting!
Drills.pdf This is the narrated Acrobat file that we use in class. You may want to save this large 9MB file so you can run it locally rather than from my web server.
Grammar.pdf This is the main grammar file you see in class each day, with slides for material mostly from Lessons 1-13. It is also narrated and is over 5MB in size
Alphabet (handout)
Vowel Sounds & Vowel Chart by classes (two handouts)
Genesis 24:1-10 divided by clauses for class in 2007. A good thing to print out, mark up, and generally work with on your own.
Hebrew Numbers (handout)
Complete Noun (handout). This is סוּס ("horse") with all of the endings
Strong Verb paradigms. The first part of the course deals with the whole of the Qal verb. The rest will cover the other parts. This file contains all of the class handouts.
Verb Practice charts. Here are two pages. One has just the קטל (QTL = "kill") letters so that you can fill in the prefixes, suffixes and vowels yourself. The second page has the prefixes and suffixes--you supply the vowels. If you find this helpful, good. If not, just skip it.
SBLHebrew is a new Unicode font that is used in all of the class
materials. It is a very smart font and works much better than the older family
of TrueType fonts, though you will have to install a new keyboard driver to
utilize it. Now you can type in Hebrew from right to left with a minimum of
keystrokes. You can even use Hebrew letters in filenames. Very cool.
Go to the Society of Biblical Literature website and find the "Biblical Fonts"
page or click the link at the beginning of this paragraph. If you have never
installed a keyboard driver, then plan on spending some time learning how to do
this, and find your Windows installation disks--you will need them (this isn't
for you Mac folks who must live with the old font technology for now).
