PAN-PACIFIC DEBATE
CHAMPIONSHIP

International Tournament – British Parliamentary Debate Format

Aloha Colleagues,

Save the date! Fall will be here any minute and so it is time to think about escaping to Hawaii for some sun, sand, surf and of course—debate! Hawaii Pacific University invites you to participate in the Pan Pacific Championship Debate Tournament, on October 16-18, 2009. The tournament is open to U.S. and international colleges and universities providing an excellent opportunity for teams to prepare for the Northeast Asian Open, the Oxford IV, and the World Championship.

The Pan Pacific Championship (PPC) will feature six preliminary debates and elimination rounds determined by the number of participants. All rounds will be debated in the British Parliamentary (Worlds Style) format. A workshop will be held on Friday for teams new to this format. The event features the lush setting of Oahu, the welcoming atmosphere of Hawaii Pacific University (HPU), and challenging competition from around the world. Highlights from last year’s tournament included fantastic debate, hula performances, Waikiki nightlife and a final round held at one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Registration for the tournament will open at the end of August. View photos from the 2008 PPC at: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=21544&id=1496864603&l=4686c42d4c

If you have any questions or would like additional information regarding the tournament, travel, or HPU, please do not hesitate to contact me and visit http://www.hpu.edu/debate. We look forward to seeing you in October at the Pan Pacific Championship.

Hotel recommended by Gary Gillespie

Queen Kapiolani Hotel http://www.queenkapiolani.com/c
This hotel is cost effective. It is kind of worn out, but is only three blocks from Waikiki Beach and across the street from the city's largest park. It is about 20 minutes to the HP campus. You may find cheaper places, but those will be surrounded by high rises. You can pay more for a nicer place, but for students this is just about ideal.
