Just as each college sport
division serves its purpose for the level of athlete
involved -- from Division I to NAIA to intramural flag -- so
intercollegiate debate programs differ in educational goals and coaching
philosophy to meet the needs of various students.
The League was formed to help those students interested
in developing public speaking skills that are appealing and
comprehensible.
We affirm that debate should:
-
promote the same
speaking styles that are effective in civic or professional
settings.
-
be both an
educational and a competitive activity.
-
be opened for
judging by any well educated audience—no debating expertise should be
required to serve as judge.
-
offer all types of
topics—fact, value or policy.
-
be accessible to
all college students even if they have not had previous debate
experience.
-
be offered at
tournaments that maintain a professional decorum as would be
expected in civic or professional settings.
If you agree with these
principles then join us.
All colleges and universities who affirm
our charter are
welcome.
