EAGLE DEBATE seeks to fulfill the mission of Northwest University to train students for leadership and service. Our desire is to see debaters strive for excellence in competition, maximize their potential as critical thinkers and public communicators and to live out the values of a positive world view in their personal and academic relationships. More about Eagle Debate

Congratulations to Calvin Horne on his re-election as Debate Team Captain.The team competed at the US National Debate tournament in Salem, Oregon the weekend of April 13. 160 teams attended.

Horne and Kruse win Second Place at Portland State. 20 teams from five universities competed on March 31 and April 1. The team won large trophies and marked a break into final for the first time this semester. Note: the Eagle debate team has won an award at every tournament that we entered this year! Each debater has won an award!

Six colleges and universities competed at Northwest. Max Mooney and Kyle Hamar got into the final round. The teams of Horne and Bowser, Borisov and Herms each won semi finalist awards.

Autumn Donnell Witt (graduated 2001) earned her Masters Degree at the University of Arizona in May, 2007. She was recently hired to be a full time professor at NU. Her husband Jacob is getting his PhD in linguistics and is an adjunct professor at NU.

Gideon is the fifth Eagle Debater chosen for this honor. He is now a Junior Staffer for the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City.

Christina Reasner
, Debating Society President for 2004, gave the student address at the 68th Commencement for Northwest College on May 8, 2004.
Christina was one of 25 students in the nation, and the only one from a non-Ivy League school,
selected for the Emerging Leaders program hosted by Oxford University.
She was also a finalist for Miss America in September 2004.


Northwest debaters sweep at Seattle University in March 2004, winning 25 awards
 
– including the institutional Debate Superior Award 
and closing out novice division.

The debate was broadcasted on RCTV cable television Redmond for a potential audience of 15,000 homes.Since then the team has appeared on KGOV Kirkland for two public debates.

U.S. Versus Ireland Show Debate
Chandra Porter and Jon King faced the Irish National Debate team
in front of a large audience in the Chapel on April 2, 2003.
Troy Henley also debated.

Jon King and Troy Henley win Gold
at the Great Alaska Speakout, September 2002,
which sought to bring together the top ten teams in the nation.
Jon went on to rank as the 15th best speaker in the nation
out of 630 students who attended the National Championship in 2004.

Autumn Donnell
 & Megan Calkins challenged the top team
from the University of British Columbia to a public debate.

Former Debate Team Captain Joshua Brittingham was selected
to speak at the NC commencement ceremony May 6th, 2000.
He spoke entirely from memory, a first for a student speaker at graduation.
Josh is a graduate of the UCLA Law School and serves as our Debate Alumni President.

Josh Brittingham was also featured in the Eastside Journal.

James Stewart, Josh Brittingham, Megan Calkins and Autumn Donnell  
closing out PCC 2000 with 1st and 2nd Place.


James Stewart is one of two debaters in the nation
selected for the US Debate Team tour of Europe. He now serves as Debate Coach at Bethany University.

James is now a speech professor and coach at Bethany College.
