NU Information Services FAQ On Campus StudentsIssue: I get the following error "No Clean Access Server found on the network." Network connectivity not established. Local PC or machine may have some issue after a new installation of the Clean Access Agent. Destination port 8905 on the Clean Access Server is being blocked by a Personal Firewall. 3rd party software interfering with the Clean Access Agent Issue: How can I avoid spyware? Spyware is the term used to describe applications that run on your computer that can track you online, profile you, and/or record your keystrokes. To avoid spyware, follow these guidelines: 1. Make sure to run an antispyware application. Perform on-demand scans regularly to root out spyware that slips through the cracks. Reboot after removal and rescan to make sure not ticklers, which are designed to reinstall spyware, have resurrected any deleted apps. Additionally, even though we are not overly-impressed with any app's real-time blocking abilities, activate whatever your app of choice offers; it's nearly always better than nothing. 2. Give your antispyware some backup. In addition to an antispyware app, make sure to run both software and hardware firewalls and antivirus applications to protect yourself against Trojan horses (and viruses, naturally). 3. Beware of peer-to-peer ("P2P") file sharing services. Many of the most popular applications include spyware in their installation procedures. Also, never download any executables via P2P, because you can't be absolutely certain what they are. Actually, it's a good idea to avoid downloading executables from anywhere but vendors or major, well-checked sites. 4. Watch out for cookies. While thy may not be the worst form of spyware, information gathered via cookies can sometimes be matched with information gathered elsewhere (via Web bugs, for example) to provide surprisingly detailed profiles of you and your browsing habits. PC Magazine's own Cookie Cop 2 (www.pcmag.com/utilities) can help you take control of cookies. 5. Squash bugs. Web bugs are spies that are activated when you open contaminated HTML e-mail. Get rid of unsolicited e-mail without reading it when you can; turn off the preview pane to delete messages without opening them. In Outlook 2003, Tools | Options, click on the Security tab and select Change Automatic Download Settings. Make sure Don't download pictures or other content automatically in HTML e-mail is checked. 6. Don't install anything without knowing exactly what it is. This means reading the end-user license agreement (EULA) carefully, as some EULAs will actually tell you that if you install the app in question, you've also decided to install some spyware with the software. Check independent sources as well, as some EULAs won't tell you about spyware. 7. Protect yourself against drive-by donwloads. Make sure your browser settings are stringent enough to protect you. In IE, this means your security settings for the Internet Zone should be at least medium Deny the browser permission to install any ActiveX control you haven't requested. 8. Keep up-to-date on the ever-changing world of spyware. Knowing the threat will help you defeat it. There are several great sites you can visit to keep abreast of this issue. PestPatrol's Research Center (www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo) has one of the most comprehensive lists of spyware and related threats we've seen. SpywareInfo is another good online source of information. Finally, PC Magazine's Security Scout utility (www.pcmag.com/utilities) aggregates dozens of security-specific news feeds and brings them right to your desktop. All electronic access accounts remain the property of Northwest University and are subject to termination upon graduation; withdrawl from courses; or as directed by the Board of Directors, University Administration, or Information Services Oversight Team. Primary data backup is the user's responsibility, as Northwest University assumes no liability for loss via intentional or unintentional means.
The normal deletion schedule is at the end of the semester following graduation/withdrawl. For example, Spring 2008 graduates will have access to their @northwestu.edu e-mail accounts until the end of December 2008. Issue: Symantec v.9 Pop-Up Ballon Fix If you are using Windows XP, you may have recently noticed an error message telling you that your anti-virus status is unknown. Issue: How do I enable or disable the Junk E-mail filters through the web? If you have mail ending up in your Junk E-mail folder and would like to turn that filter off, or have too much email coming in to your inbox and would like a way of filtering further, you can adjust your personal Junk E-mail settings as needed. When turned on, messages that are delivered to your inbox are processed through another layer of spam filtering and if they meet the necessary score, the messages are moved to your Junk E-mail folder. When disabled, all messages are left in your inbox (unless you have other rules set to move messages). To make changes to this option, follow the steps below:
1. Log in to OWA from the Eagle homepage and select Options (bottom left corner of the screen) 2. Scroll down in the right pane to the Privacy and Junk E-mail Prevention section. 3. To enable Junk E-mail filters, check the box next to Filter Junk E-mail. To disable, uncheck the box. 4. Click on Save and Close at the top to save these changes. Issue: Why can't I access my email via Hotmail using Internet Explorer? Due to a configuration change by Hotmail, you may need to use the following workaround to access your Hotmail account.
Our Networking Department is looking into a better, more transparent solution to this issue. Issue: How do I setup my Pocket PC for NU Email?
The account is setup. From Pocket Outlook, click the send/receive button and you should be able to check your mail. Issue: Spam Feature Management - How To Use the Barracuda Northwest University has added a new tool to help stop email viruses and spam. We have implemented a Barracuda Spam Firewall to filter incoming mail. The new solution will help better identify and slow/stop email viruses, spam, and email phishing attempts, while allowing greater flexibility and control over each individual inbox.
Each user will have an email quarantine. It will be setup the first time that a possible spam message is received for your account. At that time, you will receive an email similar to the message below:
To access your quarantine inbox, click on the link provided or open http://malachi.northwestu.edu in your web browser.
Your quarantine inbox will look something like this:
If you click on any of the messages, you will see a preview of that message. If it is a message you want to receive, click "Deliver". If it is a sender that you wish to always allow messages from, click "Whitelist". If you do not wish to keep the message, click "Delete".
You'll also notice two options: Classify as Not Spam and Classify as Spam. Our spam filter is based off a bayesian database. What this means is that you can select messages in the list and help train the filter for your account on what you think is spam and what isn't. The more messages you classify, the more accurate the filter will be for your account. To help with this classification, there is also a plug-in for Outlook that can be downloaded from http://malachi.northwestu.edu under the "Get Mail Client Plugins Here" link at the bottom of the page.
To adjust your spam preferences, select the preferences tab:
The first option you will have is Whitelist/Blacklist. A whitelist is a list of addresses that will not be filtered for spam. Messages coming from any addresses on this list will be allowed through to your account. A blacklist is the exact opposite- messages from any sender on your blacklist will always be blocked.
The next set of options are the Quarantine Settings:
From this page you can control your personal quarantine settings.
Enable/Disable quarantine lets you select where your quarantined messages will be held on the barracuda or delivered with the tag "[QUAR]" added to the subject line.
Quarantine Notification settings allow you to set how often the firewall will alert you that you have messages waiting in your quarantine and what address you'd like the notifications sent to.
The Spam Settings page is next:
On this page you can enable or disable the spam filtering for your account. If you would like to manage your spam controls using your own software or don't want any spam filtering to happen on your account, select "No".
The last option you can set is your password:
Issue: I need to install an antivirus program. Where can I access the NU provided Symantec AntiVirus?
The Symantec AntiVirus installation program can be accessed by clicking here. If you need the x64 version, there is a link provided at the bottom of the page.
Issue: I can no longer access the Exodus/Campus Connect site. What happened?
This summer, we've been transitioning to a new campus-wide database management system (formerly the Exodus server). You can now access grades, register, and much more using IQ.Web, the Web-based portal into our new system.
You can get to IQ.Web using the button at the top of the Eagle Homepage. Issue: I've lost my ID card. How do I get a replacement? Replacement ID cards are $10.00 and are billed to your student account. You have two options to get a replacement: either stop by the IS office and pick one up, or send an e-mail to help@ and request one be sent to your campus mailbox. (If you choose the former, we are located on the third floor of the 6710/GPS building, across 108th from Starbucks and next door to the Houghton fire station.) Unless you request a re-take, we will use the same photo as is on the Eagle Student Directory. Issue: Can I access the Northwest University email address list through Outlook? Follow these steps to setup LDAP access through Outlook 2003:
Issue: I am running Windows Vista; What are my Antivirus options?
The version of Symantec Antivirus available for NU students and employees via the Eagle Website is not compatible with Windows Vista. We recommend using avast! 4 Home Edition, a free antivirus client that is recognized by the Cisco Clean Access Agent product.
Issue: I am running Windows Vista and need Service Pack 1. These downloads are intended for on-campus connections only! If you are connected to the Internet from off-campus, please use the Microsoft Update Website. We have made Windows Vista SP1 available via a local download for both the 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit versions of the operating system. Please click the link that applies to you and choose to save the file to your computer.
