Northwest University Debate Team

William Jewell 2018

Welcome!

We are the Northwest University Debate Team and we participate in an internationally-recognized form of debate called British Parliamentary Style or simply “Worlds Style”. We compete regionally, nationally and internationally against some of the top schools in our area, the United States, and the World. Our team travels on average to 5 tournaments each semester. Several of our top debaters travel nationally and even around the world.

Our team is university-sponored through an annual budget and scholarships. The top scholarships are highly competitive and require a larger commitment to the team. Many former debaters point to their time on the debate team as the most rewarding experience during the collegiate career at Northwest University.

Although we are competitive and train to win against our opponents, we see the activity of debate as advantageous and potentially essential to a liberal arts education, and therefore welcome all to come and take part in our practices regardless of their desire to travel and compete. We discuss domestic and international politics and current events, moral issues, and faith integration. New minds and perspectives invigorate our discussion and we welcome all!

Want to be a member?

You can simply turn up at a practice to check out the team or schedule a meeting with Professor Witt to chat about scholarships and travel with the team. We practice on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons from 3:45-6:00pm Hurst 110 (library basement). Contact Professor Witt, jacob.witt@northwestu.edu, for the current location.

No experience necessary! Some of our top debaters began their careers with no prior experience in debate and public speaking. This activity translates into life skills essential for success beyond the halls of academia.
