Here are important resources around NU that may be helpful for you to know:

Grocery Stores

Grocery stores vary in price, size, and quality.  Northwest University is in an expensive neighborhood, so the immediate grocery stores are more expensive than stores further away.

-Close to NU but expensive.

PCC (10718 NE 68th Street, Kirkland, WA 98033)
-Close to NU but expensive.

Costco (8629 120th Ave NE, Kirkland, WA 98033)
-Close to NU.  Best for buying in bulk.

Safeway (12519 NE 85th Street, Kirkland, WA 98033)
-Close to NU.  A larger grocery store and a little cheaper.

Fred Meyer (12221 120th Ave NE, Kirkland, WA 98034)
-Further from NU.  A larger grocery store and more inexpensive.

Surrounding these grocery stores and the shopping malls below are a number of restaurants and places to buy food.  In addition, there a number of restaurants in downtown Kirkland (Central Way & Lake Street).

Shopping Malls

The closest shopping malls are below.  Keep in mind that there are other stores in less concentrated areas.  For random items to purchase such as notebooks or medical items, Bartell Drugs is the closest to the Northwest University campus (10625 NE 68th Street, Kirkland 98033).

Most American banks will be able to serve students and J-scholars.  If you are opening your account, please bring your passport with visa, I-20, and any money you wish to deposit to the bank.  You will be able to wire transfer money into your account after you create it.  If you need help in doing this, ISS is happy to take you.

Public Schools

F-2 dependents can enroll in public primary and secondary schools.  J-2 dependents can enroll in public school and universities in the United States.  If you are interested in this, go to the relevant school near where you live and register your children for classes.  Preschools are usually private businesses in America.


There is a library on campus in the Hurst building.  Public libraries are located throughout the Puget Sound region.  The nearest public library is in downtown Kirkland (308 Kirkland Ave, Kirkland 98033).  You can register for a public library card at any public library.


ISS can help you get a SIM card that has a pre-paid phone plan.  Please contact ISS if you want this.

Alternatively, if you wish to purchase a phone or monthly phone plan, you can go to a phone company store to do so.  The four major phone companies in the United States are Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint.  Bring your passport with you, a form of payment to purchase your plan and/or phone, and the phone you want to use.
