Services Available to PsyD Students

As a PsyD student at Northwest University, you have an incredible number of services available to you. We encourage you to make use of as many of them as possible to enrich your experience at Northwest.

Facilities/Services in 6710 Building

Computer Lab and Printers – 8 computers and printers available for student use any time the building is open

Psychological Tests – PsyD maintains an extensive library of psychological tests for use during the Psych Assessment course series. Contact the Clinical Lab Tech to schedule a time to check out a test.

Counseling Labs – PsyD has two counseling labs equipped with recording technology so students can record their practice of counseling techniques. Contact the Clinical Lab Tech to schedule your time to use these rooms.

Conference Rooms – 2 conference rooms; one seats 12-14, the other seats 4-6

Psychological Library – The smaller conference room doubles as a psychological library and houses alumni doctoral dissertations, and a multitude of books on various topics related to counseling

Kitchen/Student Lounge – The kitchen has a student refrigerator, sink, microwave, coffee pot, cups, silverware and dishes for student use. It seats about 20 people at the tables and has two couches.

Parking – Students can park in the parking garage underneath the building or in the parking lot behind the building.

Facilities/Services on Main Campus

Library and Databases – Students have access to the library on main campus as well as the databases NU subscribes to. Among the databases is PsycINFO, the well-known database of psychological and social science journals. You can access the library here

Computer Lab and Printers – Computer labs and printers are also available on the main campus

Information Technology (IT) – Northwest employs a full team of IT specialists to support students, faculty, and staff with their technology needs. If you need help, send an email to help@northwestu.edu with your request. Answers to some standard questions can be found on their website, here. Additionally, students have access to software and technology discounts through the IT webpage.

Financial Support – Have questions about your loan, student balance, or payment schedule? Go to the Student Financial Services webpage, here, to get answers or to contact them.

Career Services – The Career Development Office can help you practice interviewing, building your resume, or find a job to support you through school. Their website is here.

Campus Dining Services – The campus cafeteria and Aerie coffee shop are open to the public. For more information on the caf, click here.

Eagle Fitness Center – The fitness center is open to all students with their ID card. It is located in the Lower Barton Building.

International Student Services – The Office of International Student Services works to support international students as they transition into the university and throughout their degree program. Their website is here.

Graduate Writing Center – Writing tutors are available to review/edit papers, help develop a thesis, or explain grammar. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, click here.

Smarthinking – Smarthinking is a 24/7 online tutor service available to NU students. Through this service students have access to an online writing center, live sessions, or can submit a question to a tutor. The average tutor response rate to a question is 24 hours. Smarthinking provides a variety of tutoring subjects, study aids, and group meeting capabilities. Each student is allotted 7 hours a year but can always request additional hours if needed. Smarthinking services of particular interest to PsyD students include:

  • Writing review
    • Submit your paper online – papers may be up to 10 pages long (or 20 pages long, with the Extended Review)
    • A variety of writing elements may be evaluated (e.g., grammar, organization and structure, content development, APA style)—indicate which you are interested in receiving feedback on
    • Feedback does NOT include copy editing
    • Feedback is available within 24 hrs – will identify both strengths and areas for growth, with feedback inserted into the document
  • Writing support
    • Live support available – this is helpful as a follow-up to written feedback on your writing
    • Submit a question – for example, about usage or APA style
  • Statistics tutoring (30 min appointments)

Chapel – The chapel, located on main campus, is available to all students. Undergraduate students have daily chapel in the Chapel around noon each weekday.
