Struggling International Students
Studying abroad can be difficult! Living behind your culture, friends, and family isn’t an easy thing to do. If you are ever concerned about a student, please let International Student Services know. It is much easier to preemptively address things instead of letting them fester for a long time.
Our office typically has a more familial relationship with international students. We also have ways of contacting them that staff and faculty may not be aware of. We are happy to set up meetings to meet with students if necessary.
Academic Issues
If a student is significantly struggling with their coursework, please let International Student Services know. International students must earn a certain GPA and they have restrictions on the length of their study. Failing a semester can affect their legal status to be in the United States.
Please keep in mind that for many international students, speaking with a professor can be a scary thing because of the influence of their home culture. Many students are just not used to seeking out a professor for help. Speaking with them in private after class or even sending them an email could be a small step that helps them to overcome any fear they may experience.
You may discover English language issues, particularly in writing. The Writing Center is a great resource for students. If there are significant language issues going on, please let ISS know. The CELE program is a great resource for students to improve their English skills.
Sometimes a sit down meeting with our department helps to give students more focus and a wake up call to turn the ship around before it is too late.
By law, students must be full-time unless there are certain circumstances where they can reduce their course load. Please see the class withdrawal page for information on dropping classes.
Mental Issues
Culture shock is a very real thing that almost everyone experiences who studies abroad. It is normal to deal with feelings of loneliness as an international student. One of the most powerful influences in an international students life is a friendly American who is willing to spend time with them socially. While this may not cure their homesickness, it can be a step in right direction.
If you have concerns about a student, whether they are showing depression or even suicidal thoughts, please tell someone. The Wellness Center has trained counselors who can help with these situations. Residential Life should also be informed so the RAs can reach out to the students. If it’s appropriate, ISS would also like to be involved so we can keep an eye out for our students. Here is the Mental Health page.
Physical Issues
Our department is happy to help international students to get medical attention. All international students should be covered by some form of health insurance. Please see the health insurance and finding a doctor page if necessary. We always recommend the Wellness Center unless the medical attention clearly needs outside treatment. We also help students with their medical bills.
