Soongsil University
Soongsil University is a private, Christian University located in Seoul, Korea. It was established in 1897 by an American Missionary by the name of Dr. William M. Baird. Soongsil has persevered to keep its philosophy of “Truth and Service”, which is essentially the meaning of Soongsil’s name. However, it does not fear to reach out for new goals. It’s new goal for 2020 being Globalization, it is reaching out with a welcome hand to international students. Offering ten different undergraduate colleges and five graduate colleges, you will more than likely find your place at Soongsil.
Am I eligible:
Soongsil accepts students from over 150 international universities for a maximum of two semesters.
Visas:
You are required to have a D-2 Visa to study in Korea. To apply for this Visa from the Korean consulate or embassy near you , you must submit:
- An Application form found at www.hikorea.go.kr
- Passport
- Certificate of admission
- Bank Statement or a scholarship certificate proving you maintain a minimum balance or have a scholarship certificate
- Two photos
- Visa Processing Fee
- Any other documents required by Korean Consulate
Cost:
Your tuition will remain the same and it will be sent to NU as normal. Your native English can also give you a job at Soongsil, by allowing you to work up to six hours a week with up to five Soongsil students helping them learn English. You could raise the Korean Won equivalent of $1,300 USD. There are also 10hr/wk internship programs available to you giving you up to the Won equivalent of $700 USD.
Language:
Approximately 18% of all classes at Soongsil are taught in English. Korean language night courses are available to international students free of charge! Soongsil also has the Soongsil International Ambassador Program, which will help you adjust to Korean Culture and the fast pace of city life in Seoul. You will receive a Korean buddy who will take you to class and show you around campus. Soongsil holds official cultural activities once a month as well.
Campus Life:
Soongsil, being located in the capitol of South Korea, is a very diverse area. You have access to the airport, the subway, shops, attractions, and the like. There are seven different areas on campus to purchase food, including a coffee shop. There are AV rooms, a gym, a health care center, a post office, and ATM’s on campus. There are over 70 clubs on campus ranging from rap and hip hop to fencing. A museum on campus holds many artifacts from the Korean War, as well as the first bible ever to be translated into Korean. The school’s historic start in North Korea and it’s quick move to safe south Korea during the war can be learned about in the museum.
Housing:
Housing is available in a residence hall, as well as off campus in their apartments. Dormitories at Soongsil can cost as little as $200 USD a month. However, there is a chance for a housing fee waiver if you live on-campus. At Soongsil, you have the option of living in one-person, two-person, and four-person dorms as well as guest houses. NU students can apply for a full housing scholarship/ waiver.
