Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) FAQ

← Back to Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

What is SAP? SAP is a set of federal benchmarks for eligibility for financial aid and enrollment. The benchmarks are a 2.0 cumulative GPA and a 67% course completion rate.

What happens if I don’t make SAP benchmarks? If you don’t meet both the SAP benchmarks, you will be placed on Academic and Financial Aid Suspension. This means that you cannot receive financial aid or continue enrollment at NU.

What should I do if I am put on Academic Suspension? If you want to continue studying at NU, you should submit a suspension appeal.

How do I appeal an Academic Suspension? Complete the Suspension Appeal Form and email it Student Financial Services.

What happens if my appeal is approved? You will be notified via email and should receive an invitation from an advisor in the Advising Office to meet and develop your SAP Recovery Plan. After you meet with your advisor, you will be able to register for classes.

What is an SAP Recovery Plan? This is a document signed by the student and their academic advisor agreeing to a meet twice a month and work together throughout the semester to bring the student back into SAP compliance. Students on SAP Appeal must agree to and follow the recovery plan to be allowed to return on academic probation.

What if my appeal is denied? If your appeal is denied, we encourage you to pursue courses at other schools, such as community colleges, to demonstrate academic success. If you meet the following benchmarks, you can be considered for reinstatement:

  • Completed a full course load (15 quarter or 12 semester credits).
  • Completed at least 67% of credits.
  • Earned at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • All grades are a C- or higher.
